Are you giving your gutters the time and attention they deserve?
We should clean our gutters every time before spring and they will possibly outlive your house. Leaves often fall into the gutters often find their way into the down pipes clogging them. Just like other physical debris, leaves too can cause damage to your roof. The fascia is affected most – this is that board to which gutters are fixed. Imagine what would happen to your foundation (or walls) when moisture seeps through the gutters. You should, therefore, repair the gutters as soon as they’re damaged. Pro tip: Look at the local weather forecast and plan gutter repairs as appropriate.
Gutters and Down-pipe Repairs
Though not mandatory, cleaning gutters are easiest when you have a hose attachment. I mean, who wouldn’t want to make the most out of the water’s pressure? Chances are, you’ll need a ladder while performing this job (unless you’re exceptionally tall).
Start by removing the larger twigs and leaves. You could use a trowel and dump them into a waste bucket.
The finer particles are a little stubborn and they won’t go away without force. Work your way from the end facing away from the downspout. You don’t want to battle gravity (pun intended). You may notice that the water isn’t draining as fast as you would love. This means that the downpipes are clogged too and you need to clean them right away. Check the strainer before unclogging the downspout.
Roofing and Gutter Problems
How do you know it’s time to repair the gutters? There’s water in the gutters even after you have flushed the downspout. Start by looking at the gutter’s slope. Use a spirit level. You could also visually inspect the gutter if you don’t have the level lying around.
Faulty sloping is usually the biggest culprit behind faulty gutters. Strat by detaching the hangers. Readjust the slope and then securely fit them back in place. I find it easier working from section to section lest the whole gutter system falls apart
Gutters and Downpipes
Visually inspect the sections for rust (or obviously missing parts.) You will something is amiss when you see it. Roofing standards suggest that you should have support hangers at 2 feet intervals. Ensure this is adhered to.
Fascia – Soffit & Repairs
First things first, they prone to rotting. This is often brought by leaking shingles above. Start by checking for cracks or holes. In a few roofing installations, there are shingles on top of mitered fascia boards. Rainwater finds its way through these openings.
Plywood Soffit often cracks at the roof joint. It may be difficult fixing this problem while at ground level. You will often need a ladder to further assess the problem. In most case, they’re damaged by rainwater.
Roofing contractors often advise against fixing fascia issues on your own. Why? Most do it yourself handymen often fix the Soffit while ignoring the roofing yet they work hand in hand. Fascia boards quickly rot in the presence of water. Fix all pending roofing issues before attempting to repair them.
